SUBJECT: Back To School

Welcome to the 2019-2020 Robinson SchoolYear!

As we wish the graduating class 2019 a heartfelt farewell, we welcome all of the new students that are following in their footsteps.  The PTSO wants you to be aware of recent and upcoming changes as well as important events that you should know.

Congratulations to Our New Principal!

We are thrilled that Tracey Phillips has been named the new principal for Robinson! Ms. Phillips brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to Robinson Secondary School.  She was a Special Education teacher at Bonnie Brae Elementary School and Robinson Secondary until her appointment as an assistant principal at Hayfield Secondary School in 2005.  In 2012, she became the associate principal at Hayfield Secondary School.  She returned to Robinson Secondary in 2014 as the associate principal.  Since April 2019, she served as the interim principal at Robinson Secondary.  Ms. Phillips facilitated and coordinated the implementation of a school-wide grading policy, which resulted in student centered grading practices.  She increased student and staff recognition to raise student engagement, strengthen culture, and maximize positive working conditions.  The school climate and culture were enhanced by the creation and implementation of the Dude Be Nice campaign, academic pep rallies, Doughnut Fridays, the Robinson improvement breakfast, and the Robinson Pyramid Parade.  In addition, she created a partnership with George Washington University and will be hosting GW-Fairfax Partnership interns.  Ms. Phillips is a strong instructional leader who believes in promoting best practices for teaching and learning.  She builds relationships with staff, students, parents and community members.

Ms. Phillips (a Robinson graduate) earned her Bachelor of Science in Liberal Studies and her Master of Science in Special Education at Longwood College, and her Master of Education in Education Leadership at George Mason University.  Ms. Phillips continues to enhance her knowledge of teacher leadership qualities and best practices by attending professional development workshops

Robinson's PTSO and Academic Boosters Merge

We are excited to announce that the PTSO and the Academic Boosters have merged! With both groups focused on our students, we agreed that the merge would help both groups publicize opportunities and scholarships.  We are still collecting box tops and will be offering exam prep classes and scholarships.

Robinson One Reads

“Three children. Three different countries. Three Harrowing stories of survival under the shadow of war.  Each protagonist navigates the uncertainty of leaving behind the only life they've ever known, revealing the fear and heartache associated with being a refugee."

This year, the summer reading assignment is for ALL students (grades 7-12). Don't wait until the last day!

Robinson will kick off the school year for students at the Robinson Ram Rally (Locker Day) - 8/22/19, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.  Parents and students are welcome to come in any time during that window.

All required paperwork must be submitted in order for students to receive their schedule and locker assignments.

At a school our size, there are tons of way to be involved!

Please contact Shelley Smith at or 703/250-8918 if you can help!

Here are our immediate needs (click on the underlined title for the contact information):

Marketplace Committee- This Bazaar is the PTSO's largest fundraiser for the year and represents more than 1/2 of our budget.  Volunteers are needed to help:

  • coordinate donations for the silent auction
  • coordinate vendors, locations and fees
  • coordinate volunteers on the day of the event
  • arrange for on-site food trucks
  • schedule the 2nd annual Santa visit

Scholarship Committee- We need a few underclassman parents to be on our scholarship committee.

Robinson Bakers- If you love to bake (or even to shop for bakery items), we need some volunteers who will help coordinate our hospitality events.

Robinson Eats(Out) - We have had great success raising money with our local restaurant partners. We need someone who can set up school fundraising nights.

Club Coordinator- It's hard to believe, but we have funds available for clubs and other school organizations that don't get utilized. We need someone to act as a liaison with the administration to get the word out and help coordinate the PTSO grants.

Webmaster - We are looking for someone to manage and update the webpage.

Membership Data-miner - Each year we update the membership directory with the new students. The process results in duplicate family entries, so we are looking for a database/excel savvy volunteer to help identify duplicate entries.

PE Uniform Distribution - Help is needed for the first week of school to distribute PE uniforms during class.

More to come! We will be looking for volunteers to help with RAM Rally, PE uniform distribution, health screening and more.  Please look for the signup requests!

We are collecting!

Would you throw away a dime?  They add up!  That's what a box top is worth to Robinson.

If you see this label, use the new Box Tops app to scan your receipt. The app will find participating products purchased at any store and instantly add cash to your school's earnings online.

You can still clip the traditional box tops and drop them off in the main office.
